Fungal Colonization of Weathered Radiata Pine Surfaces Protected with Inorganic Nanoparticles and Coatings

چکیده

Photoactive nanoparticles are used to reduce microbial colonization and self-clean surfaces of materials such as glass ceramics. To test whether an approach is feasible for wood surfaces, we treated radiata pine samples with TiO2 (rutile anatase) or ZnO then coated the different finishes. Coated uncoated controls were exposed outdoors six months. After exposure, fungi colonizing identified using molecular techniques microscopy, colour changes in also measured. Treatment reduced discolouration during weathering but had little effect on by black mould fungi. In contrast, pretreatment titanium dioxide increased number diversity including basidiomycetes samples, whereas zinc oxide opposite effect. Zinc nanoparticles, however, less effective than rutile at reducing natural weathering. We conclude that none photoactive their own able discoloration samples. This suggests it may be difficult create self-cleaning nanoparticles.

Densified Radiata Pine for Structural Composites

A novel wood-based composite has been developed for use in structural applications. The process was designed to utilize rapidly-grown, low density, wood species. Plantation grown radiata pine is particularly well suited to this process. This is a laminated composite, where the lamina may be comprised of various materials, some of which have been treated with the viscoelastic thermal compression...

The role of motility and chemotaxis in the bacterial colonization of protected surfaces

Internal epithelial surfaces in humans are both oxygenated and physically protected by a few hundred microns thick hydrogel mucosal layer, conditions that might support bacterial aerotaxis. However, the potential role of aerotaxis in crossing such a thin hydrogel layer is not clear. Here, we used a new setup to study the potential role of motility and chemotaxis in the bacterial colonization of...

Colouring crystals with inorganic nanoparticles.

A simple, one-pot method is presented whereby gold nanoparticles coated with a zwitterionic diblock copolymer are incorporated within single crystals of calcite. This may provide a versatile alternative to dyeing crystal with organic molecules and could be extended to create a series of new nanocomposite crystals with novel properties.

Dimensional Stability of Particle Board and Radiata Pine Wood (Pinus radiata D. Don) Treated with Different Resins

Particleboard and solid wood stakes were treated with either an isocyanate or phenol formaldehyde resin and exposed in soil beds comprising three different soil types and two moisture contents. The treatments resulted in a marked improvement in the dimensional stability of particleboard but had no effect on solid wood. Higher moisture uptakes in stakes exposed in sandy soils indicated that the ...

Bacterial and fungal communities in the rhizosphere of field-grown genetically modified pine trees (Pinus radiata D.).

This study assessed the impact of Pinus radiata (D. Don) genetically modified (GM) by biolistic insertion of the LEAFY and nptII genes on rhizosphere microbial communities of field grown trees. Rhizosphere soil was sampled quarterly for two consecutive years. A culture-independent approach was used to characterise the microbial communities based on PCR and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresi...
